My series is titled, Soulful Vibes and Rhythms. Soulful Vibes and Rhythms is a series of images that explores the combining of various mediums to convey a visual interpretation of the poly-rhythmic, improvisational sounds of jazz music.

What makes this jazz series original is not only the fusion of all three art forms, but the creative process its self. The majority of the paintings done in this series are on fiberboard panels. These panels are broken up into different rectangular shapes that vary in size, and are randomly placed on the surface. The shapes are then elevated on top of one another, creating a unique painting surface. This creates a three dimensional structure of distinct mini surfaces which allows for these various painting aesthetics to stand out on their own while maintaining continuity, balance and harmony with the overall painting.

The fracturing and dividing of the space into almost top-down architectural or even geological forms –raised surfaces and lower areas like, plateau, valley roof tops and street levels is reflective of the urban streets that inspired the sounds of jazz music as the art form moved throughout the big cities of New York and Chicago in the Fifties.

My color use is very selective. It is similar to that of a musical instrument that produce notes with a clear and specific pitch, the frequencies involved are part of a harmonic series. We see each mixture of colors as frequencies of sounds. Various differences in the balance of colors used as musical scales and frequencies display their relationship to the fundamental pitch, tone and tenor that are inherit in the poly-rhythmic sounds of jazz music.
